MORRISONS REPORTS SHOPPERS ARE BUYING IN BULK

April 6th, 2009

The IGD reported on Morrisons’ specially commissioned research which showed that 69% of their shoppers are now buying in bulk in order to reduce their costs. The research also also found that customers are cooking more than they require for one meal and freezing what’s left to enjoy another time.  As a result the sales of food storage containers had gone up 7% year on year.

Angus Maciver, Group marketing and communications director, said: “The sales figures show a real shift in consumer behaviour compared to this time last year, as shoppers are actively trying to cut back on food waste to make the most of their weekly shop.

It’s encouraging to see that our shoppers are reverting to traditional cooking methods in a bid to save money. Our in-store experts have seen a 10% increase in sales in the last 12 months of stewing steak as shoppers are opting for cuts of meat that they can use to prepare in bulk.”
