EATING FIVE A DAY MIGHT REDUCE STROKE RISK

April 16th, 2009

Nutraingredients.com reports that according to a new study in The Lancet eating your five a day can cut stroke-risk by 26%.

Everyone knows the five a day message but putting it into practice doesn’t seem to happen in peoples actual lives. A study of behaviour has indicated that in many developed countries people are actually eating nearer to three portions a day.

From the University Of London, Feng said that “The findings provide strong support for the recommendations encouraging the public to serve more than five servings of fruit and vegetables a day.

The research showed that those who eat three to five portions a day have a risk of stroke of 11% lower. Further to that, eating five or more portions a day lowered the stroke risk by 26%.

Researchers couldn’t pin down the exact components which were beneficial, but they did mention fibre, folate, potassium and anti oxidants as likely players.

Feng He said “Since raised blood pressure is the major cause of stroke, the blood pressure lowering effect of potassium could be one of the major mechanisms contributing to a reduced risk of stroke with an increased fruit and vegetable intake,”

A limiting factor of the study is that individuals who consume more fruit and vegetables are, by definition, less likely to eat unhealthily generally, with a lower intake of salt and fat, and are more likely to be physically active.

The study did not actually pin point which fruit and vegetables had more of a beneficial effect than other.
