WAITROSE UNVEILS ITS SECOND CONVENIENCE STORE

March 19th, 2009

Waitrose has today opened its second convenience store in the UK in Clifton, Bristol, as it continues to grow its presence in the south west. The Clifton Pavilion store in Queens Road has created 60 new jobs for the area. Over 300 jobs will be also be created by a new Waitrose shop in Weston-super-Mare shop in the autumn and new stores in Devon in Holsworthy and Torquay in June.

Each new employee will become Partners in the John Lewis Partnership, entitling them to a say in how the business is run and from next year an annual share in its profits. Last week existing Partners were told they would receive 13 per cent of their annual salary, the equivalent of just under 7 weeks wages, in their March pay-packet.

The retailer has committed to a long term lease with CBRE Investors for the former ‘Fresh & Wild’ unit in the Clifton. The unit, which has a sales area of 6,000sq ft, has received a multi-million pound makeover ahead of its opening.

Waitrose successfully opened its first convenience store in Nottingham in December. The shops offer something unique within the convenience market place, building on the brand’s reputation for quality produce and excellent customer service.

A further two trials of the format, at locations still to be decided, are also expected to open later this year.

Waitrose Clifton Manager, Dafydd Moore, said: “Clifton and Waitrose are the perfect match – it is the ideal location with which to launch our second convenience store.

“We are always overwhelmed by the number of letters we receive asking us to open new Waitrose shops in Bristol and the south west. There is clearly a real passion for quality food here so we are naturally keen to continue to increase our presence in the region as part of our growth programme.

“Customers will be surprised about how much of the Waitrose offer we fit into a shop of this size. We believe you shouldn’t have to compromise on the standard of your shopping experience just because a store is smaller and designed for convenience.”
