ITALIAN AMBIENT READY MEALS – FROM ITALY
Here’s something fairly novel launched at IFE! A range of Italan ready meals from Italy!
The are ambient, shelf stable, long life, and follow a known format but the company called “Gustosi” is said to use a revolutionary sterlisation process which allows for no added preservatives.
Unsurprisingly they are producing lasagne, cannelloni, past and rice dishes, meat and fish dishes as well as what they describe as “tasty morsels of game” in sauce.
The ambient business has existed for more than twenty years, with Marks & Spencer leading the field in the UK. It has never made the promised inroads. It seems that consumers can’t get their heads around the need for keeping a ready meal in the cupboard when they can reach into the chiller or the freezer.
Perhaps the huge take off of the rice in Doy Pack format will cause a behaviour change and will allow companies such as “Gustosi” to reach the hurdle rates demanded by our main retailers.
