YOU’LL GET THIN WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM YOUR FRIENDS
Published today by The New England Journal Of Medicine, robust evidence shows that the high protein diet advocates and the low fat diet advocates are both right. The secret lies in doing it in company!
The paper begins by stating that there are very few studies on diet that extend beyond a year. In this particular project, which was conducted over two years, 811 overweight participants were given diets differing in percentages of fat, protein and carbohydrates.
Those taking part could either attend groups or have individual instruction sessions.
After six months participants had lost an average of 7% of their starting weight, but by a year they had regained weight.
However the general conclusion is that reduced calorie diets do result in weight loss regardless of which nutrient they emphasise. There was a marginal improvement for those who attended groups.
