RED TRACTOR TO APPEAR ON ALL GREENE KING BEERS
Greene King has become the first brewer in the UK to be awarded the prestigious Red Tractor certification for all its beers – a range of over 20 cask beers and 10 bottled beers a year. With the current economic situation, people are showing an increasing interest in supporting British farmers and goods, and the Red Tractor certification demonstrates those authentic local origins.
David Clarke, chief executive of Assured Food Standards, which runs the Red Tractor scheme said: “Congratulations to Greene King on being the first brewers to gain Red Tractor across all their beers. It is something of which everyone in the company can be extremely proud.
“They have an impressive set-up based on traditional brewing methods, using top quality local ingredients and with excellent controls throughout the supply chain. Their Red Tractor award says a lot about their commitment to quality, attention to detail and insistence on traceability. It offers them the opportunity to communicate an extremely positive and relevant message to consumers, which we are only too pleased to endorse.”
Just as the Abbey’s monks did many centuries ago, Greene King, who has over many years invested more in cask beer than any other brewer, still draws water from the chalk wells below the town of Bury St Edmunds. And they still buy their barley from local Suffolk and Norfolk farmers – who almost certainly grow the best malting barley in the world. Every square metre of land produces enough barley for around 6 pints of Greene King IPA, or any other Greene King beer! The Red Tractor award highlights the brewers commitment to quality ingredients sourced from British farmers.
Steve Magnall, Greene King brewing and distribution director, “Cask beer drinkers are a discerning lot. They care desperately about the quality of each pint they drink – and so do we!
“Our brewers and tasters are obsessive about quality and consistency and, in addition to rigorous controls and processes in the brewery, we insist on a series of checks with suppliers. We work extremely closely with farmers to ensure that we always get the very best quality ingredients and that, even when the crops vary as a result of the weather, they can still deliver a consistent and top quality pint.
