Supermarkets sourcing UK-only meat
Sainsbury’s and Waitrose are both claiming they are the first supermarket to source UK-only meat for their products.
According to Justin James, the category manager for Sainsbury’s, the supermarket giant now only uses British meat in its hot and cold pies, soups, party foods and ready meals.
Mr James says this move makes them the first to source only British meat for its ready made foods.
He added that there will be an extra 3,100tons of UK beef and 6,200tons of UK chicken sourced by the store, and that this would help "drive the carcase balance in the UK".
He said: "We were getting very clear messages from consumers, they wanted the confidence of knowing where their products are coming from. And we think this gives us a very unique position in the marketplace."
At the same time however, Waitrose, part of the John Lewis Partnership, claims to be the first and only UK retailer to use UK-only pork, chicken and beef for all its sandwiches, ready meals, cooked and fresh meat.
The supermarket has also announced it will increase UK sourcing by stocking only British bacon, following its decision to only stock 100% British chicken in October.
