Stores may back Government cookbook

December 26th, 2008

The Government is in talks with the supermarket giants to distribute a cookbook aimed at improving the cooking skills and eating habits of children in the UK.

The Real Meals cookbook is available for free for all 11-year-olds across the country in a bid to reduce obesity levels and teach children about the importance of a healthy diet.

The book, which was launched in September and is being back by TV chef Phil Vickery, includes 32 classic dishes including spaghetti bolognese and apple crumble. Each recipe is designed to be simple enough for children to create.

So far more than 330,000 copies of the book have been ordered online, but the Government is hoping distribution of the book will increase if it is handed out in supermarkets.

Schools Secretary Ed Balls said: "We are making sure that all children will learn basic cooking skills at school and we are putting the funding and staff in to make that a reality.

"We are also speaking to major supermarkets about supporting our reforms – we need their help to get the healthy eating message over to families directly."

Ministers also announced the Government is to spend £2 million on recruiting 750 specialist teaching assistants to help run cookery classes in schools.
