Mancunians top New Year drinks poll

December 31st, 2008

Sales figures show people in Manchester will be celebrating the New Year more than anywhere else in the UK.

The largest increase in the amount of beers, wines and spirits bought at Tesco supermarkets in the run-up to the celebrations has been seen in Manchester. Sales of beers have increased by 14% and spirits by 12% compared to the same week last year.

Shoppers in the city have also been buying more champagne and sparkling wine, with sales up 18% on last year.

The increase in sales is the largest seen by Tesco stores nationwide, but other figures show some cities are likely to boost sales of particular drinks.

The most bottles of champagne have been bought in Newcastle, which takes over from Birmingham as the “Champagne Charlies” of 2008 and figures show rum is the preferred drink with Tesco shoppers in Liverpool.

Other tipples that were regionally popular includes bottles of Irish cream, which have been purchased the most in Aberdeen, and Tesco has found tequila is selling better in Bournemouth than anywhere else.

Dan Jago, Tesco’s beer, wines and spirits category director, said: “The map clearly shows that despite a gloomy economic forecast for the coming year, Brits are still determined to have a good time and see in the New Year in style.”
