Guilt-free wines from Fairtrade

December 31st, 2008

The Fairtrade organisation is offering a range of wines that are delightful on the palate and easy on the conscience.

It suggested using Fairtrade Fortnight, from February 23 to March 8, to investigate the wine on offer – starting with top-quality wines from South African outfit Thandi.

Its Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot are award-winning Fairtrade wines.

The white wine Thandi Chardonnay costs £6.99 at Tesco and is described as lightly oaked and buttery in texture, bursting with citrus, orange blossom and vanilla flavours.

Fairtrade said it goes well with dishes such as roast lemon-herb chicken, which is featured in the Fairtrade Everyday Cookbook.

The slightly cheaper Thandi Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is a delicate combination of asparagus and green pepper flavours, with touches of passion fruit with a crisp lime finish.

The light wine goes well with fish dishes or as a slightly acidic foil to the richness of a risotto.

For a red wine, enthusiasts can try Thandi Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot. This blend of cassis and red berry flavours is made to accompany roast lamb, beef or rich oxtail stew. This wine and the Sauvignon Blanc Semillon cost £5.49 from www.ethicalsuperstore.com.
