Britons opt for smaller turkeys

December 26th, 2008

Figures released by a British supermarket have shown that families are opting for smaller turkeys this Christmas.

A survey by Morrisons shows that orders for fresh ‘small turkeys’ have increased by 63%. Orders of ‘turkey crowns’ are up 29% and boneless turkey breast joints, which result in less waste all round, are up by more than 500%.

Research shows that 95% of Britons do not know the correct size of a turkey to feed a family of four. Last Christmas this resulted in two million kilos of turkey being binned from dinner plates – the weight equivalent to 1373 double-decker buses.

Roy Craven, Morrisons’ butchery specialist said: "This year more customers are asking our butchers about getting the right size turkey for their Christmas dinner and many are ordering smaller birds.

"They do not want to waste food and a small bird, weighing two to three kilos will easily feed three to five adults."

The smaller turkey suggests that Britons are taking a more considered approach to Christmas food.
