Salad firm wins top tomato prizes

November 21st, 2008

A commercial tomato-grower from the Isle of Wight has won the top three prizes in a tastiest tomato competition, in spite of this summer being one of the worst ever for tomato-growing.

First prize went to the Apero tomato, grown by Wight Salads grower Paul Howlett. His colleagues Ben Smith and Kieran Devine took second and third place respectively with the Piccolo and the Sweetie.

Gerry Hayman, executive officer of the British Tomato Growers’ Association, which organised the event, commented: "This summer must have been about the worst ever to grow tomatoes, but we can produce a fantastic product under glass.

"When we go to shows we are told by the public that tomatoes don’t taste like they used to, but we actually think ours taste better.

"The problem is four out of five tomatoes sold are imported, something politicians might take on board when they bang on about the environment and importing food."
