PEK firm launches premium hot dog

November 10th, 2008

Smithfield Foods, manufacturers of the PEK range of canned meats, has launched a new premium hot dog.

The already-successful chopped pork range will add the new hot dog to its brand as an alternative to low quality products.

The PEK hot dogs are made from high quality pork and are free from artificial colours and flavours.

Despite hot dogs being one of the most popular of all canned meat products, the category has been blighted by low value products containing mechanically recovered meat.

Jane Bentley, marketing controller of Smithfield Foods, said: "Canned meats and in particular hot dogs have, in the past, struggled to prove their quality and we are proud that our PEK premium hot dogs meet our high standards of quality without compromising on the value which is so important in this sector."

PEK was launched in the UK in 1976 and is still one of the UK’s best-loved meat brands, with its canned meat products particularly strong in the North East and Yorkshire.

The premium hot dogs will be launched into Sainsbury’s this month.
