High demand for home-grown fizz

November 7th, 2008

Unprecedented demand for English sparkling wines is likely to see producers sell out this Christmas, according to the industry.

English Wine Producers, the marketing association of the English wine industry, says that suppliers are unable to meet demand thanks to the growing reputation of English wines both locally and internationally.

Between now and the end of the year there will be an estimated 112,000 bottles of home-grown sparkling wine available to buy, with demand outstripping supply by about six to one, the association said.

Meanwhile, retail analyst Mintel said that Britons have bought twice as many sparkling wines as champagne in the past two years.

Julia Trustram Eve, a spokeswoman for English Wine Producers, said: "All of our leading winemakers are finding it a real challenge to keep up with their customer demands.

"And it’s not just Brits that have discovered the delights of English wines – both the Chinese and Japanese can’t get enough of it either. Our wines are also selling well in Scandinavia and the United States."

The association predicts that English sparkling wine production will rise to 3.7 million bottles by 2015, accounting for two thirds of all English wines.
