Frozen food sector targets carbon

The British Frozen Food Federation (BFFF) and the Carbon Trust have announced their first joint venture for the frozen food industry.

The partnership aims to improve temperature efficiency within the industry through its ‘Reducing the Carbon Footprint of the frozen food industry’ project.

The project will involve eight BFFF members including Bernard Matthews Foods, Headland Foods, Lyons Seafoods, R&R Ice Cream, Lockwoods and Schwan’s Consumer Brands UK.

Currently many frozen food companies keep their temperatures well beyond the required level as part of a safety margin to protect themselves. The project aims to change this practice.

Initial trials by BFFF indicate there is an opportunity to reduce carbon emissions simply by companies ensuring their storage facilities and processes are operating at appropriate temperature levels.

The project will offer the best practice guidance for frozen food businesses through a series of reports and offer the potential to improve temperature efficiency within the supply chain.

BFFF will host an industry seminar in February 2009 to deliver the results of the project.
