Chef named UK’s top pizza designer
A Glasgow restaurateur best known for creating the world’s most expensive pizza has won the title of UK pizza designer of the year with a pizza costing just £1.50 to make.
Domenico Crolla also received a commendation from top Harrods chef Giuseppe Silvestri for his budget creation, which includes grilled chicken breast, cream, parmesan cheese, mixed wild mushrooms and pasta.
Mr Crolla commented: "It’s such an honour to win this award – and to get praise from Giuseppe is even more amazing.
"After I won the award I spoke to him in Harrods, and he commented that he appreciated my presentation and was particularly impressed with my idea about presenting an affordable, yet delicious pizza.
"The ingredients are so simple and yet make up the most incredible array of tastes."
Mr Crolla beat off nine other chefs from across the UK to take top honour in the Pizza Designer of the Year awards, organised by the Pizza, Pasta & Italian Food Association (PAPA).
In 2007 he created a 12" pizza topped with venison medallions, Scottish smoked salmon, edible gold, caviar and lobster, which sold for just over £2,000.
