Additive ‘helps control diabetes’

Food manufacturers in the UK can now get hold of a new food additive that has been proven to be better than prescription drugs at regulating blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

US company ATM Metabolics has developed Emulin – a natural compound derived from the rind and peel of tropical fruits, which mimics the effects of natural insulin in the body.

Its makers have billed the product as making processed food such as cakes and white bread safer for people with non-insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes, and also having the potential to prevent others from developing the condition.

ATM Metabolics’ scientific director, Daryl Thompson, said: "We want as many UK food manufacturers as possible to start using this.

"It has no effect on the taste of food, but widespread use would quickly make a significant difference to the health of the nation, saving the NHS millions."

He added: "Recent research has shown how important it is for type 2 diabetics to control long-term blood sugar levels to prevent heart attacks and other complications.

"Adding Emulin to food is a highly effective way to do that without forcing a major diet change or use of prescription drugs."
