Yorkshire has best restaurants

October 17th, 2008

A new restaurant guide has said Yorkshire has more good quality places to eat than any other county in the UK.

Harden’s 2009 UK Restaurant Guide ignores the myth of a gastronomic divide between North and South, with diners reporting that Yorkshire is the best county for eating out.

The White Rose County was found to have 113 good restaurants, based on food value and quality, while southern counties Surrey and East Sussex came bottom of the heap with 43 and 35 respectively.

The restaurant offering the best food in Britain was also in the North of England – Northcote in Langho, Lancashire.

Some 85,000 reports from more than 8,000 regular diners helped rate eateries for the guide, produced in association with Remy Martin.

It found there were 44 quality dining establishments in North Yorkshire alone, including the Yorke Arms in Ramsgill-in-Nidderdale and the Magpie Cafe in Whitby.

This year the Remy Martin Excellence Award was won by L’Anima, a modern Italian on the northern fringe of the City of London.

Harden’s 2009 UK Restaurant Guide by Richard and Peter Harden is published on October 15, priced £14.99.
