New measure mooted for draught beer

October 24th, 2008

Two thirds of a pint of beer and taster glasses of wine might be served in pubs under new weights and measures proposals under review.

They would also lift restrictions on the sizes of some types of food, the National Weights and Measures Laboratory (NWML) has said.

Pubs and brewers have called for the new measure to allow greater flexibility in serving draught beers, especially those with a higher alcohol content.

The proposals will consider introducing two thirds of a pint of draught beer or cider alongside the current pint, half pint and third of a pint – a legal measure that has fallen out of common usage.

They would also allow wine to be served for tasting and sampling in glasses of less than 75ml, and are separate to EU regulations relaxing rules on the sizes of pre-packaged goods from April next year.
