Landmark Fairtrade product hailed
The Fairtrade Foundation has certified the 300th chocolate product to carry its mark – a box of hand-finished truffles.
The Divine Marc de Champagne Milk Chocolate Truffles have been designated Fairtrade during Chocolate Week, which runs until October 19.
The 16 hand-finished milk chocolate truffles, filled with a champagne ganache, are made from cocoa grown by farmers from the Kuapa Kokoo co-operative in Ghana.
They are available in 200g boxes from Oxfam stores and Ethical Superstore for £9.99.
The Fairtrade Foundation also revealed that sales of Fairtrade cocoa products for the quarter from April to June 2008 have risen by 24% to £6 million, compared with £5 million in the same period last year.
On top of that, volume sales – the real indicator of the cash that has gone back to producers to spend on community development projects – have increased by 17%.
Business development manager Rachel King said: "You don’t usually need an excuse to eat chocolate, but here’s the perfect one to get you going: an entire week dedicated solely to chocolate. And you’ll find it all the sweeter for knowing that the farmers have received a fair price for their cocoa."
