Food outlets shut amid health risk

October 8th, 2008

Environmental health officers shut down seven food premises last month due to fears over public health.

The highest number of enforcement orders were issued by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) in September, including one for top Dublin restaurant Ely Wine Bar and Cafe.

FSAI chief executive Dr John O’Brien said he was concerned by the peak.

He said: "The number of enforcement orders issued in September represents the highest number of orders issued in one month so far this year.

"We continue to stress to food businesses that it is their responsibility to adhere to best practice set down in law or there will be consequences such as enforcement orders."

He added: "Our main priority is the safety of the consumer in relation to food, and the food they purchase must be produced to the highest standards attainable."

A total of 26 closure orders have been served on food businesses so far this year, along with four improvement orders and two prohibition orders.
