Shrimps get sustainable thumbs up
A shrimping operation has become the first in Canada to win approval from an organisation that promote sustainable fishing.
Clearwater Seafoods’ Canadian northern prawn fishery has been certified as sustainable and well-managed concern by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). It is the second product from Clearwater Seafoods to be MSC certificated – following on from the firm’s Argentine scallops range.
Clearwater markets shrimp under their Clearwater Pride of St. Anthony brand as well as numerous retailer and food service private label brands sold around the globe.
The company’s sustainable harvesting practices extend beyond their shrimp and Argentine scallops, which achieved MSC certification in 2006.
Mr MacDonald said: "We’re proud of our record and efforts in the area of environmental stewardship. It’s been a commitment and our way of doing business for over 30 years."
"While we have long practised and invested in new technologies that improve our sustainable harvesting methods, adding the globally recognised blue MSC eco-label to our products makes it easier for the consumer and chef to make responsible seafood choices."
