Dairy chief urges sustainability

September 18th, 2008

The new head of trade association Dairy UK has called for sustainability measures to be implemented across the industry to ensure its continued future success.

Speaking at Dairy UK’s annual dinner, chairman Mark Allen set out his visions for the future of dairy production and supplies in the UK.

"I will ensure that Dairy UK addresses the key challenges that are facing our sector," he said. "We must tackle the issue of sustainability on economic, environmental and social grounds.

"That also means food security, and we’ll be making it clear in a forthcoming paper how government can support our dairy farmers and processors alike. Profitable farmers are the key to a strong, vibrant industry."

Mr Allen said that the group would continue making its views known to the Government and other stakeholders. "Our effectiveness as a political lobbyist is based on our ability to represent the whole dairy industry – something we can continue to do thanks to our broad Board structure and membership," he added.

Dairy UK is a trade association that represents the interests of dairy farmers, producer co-operatives, milk processors and doorstep delivery men and women.
