Snail farm established ‘in spare bedroom’
Demand for snails has prompted one woman to farm the animals in a spare bedroom, it has been reported.
Helen Howard, from Canterbury in Kent, currently has 2,000 snails in her home but is still unable to meet orders from local restaurants, according to the BBC.
She was inspired by a desire among consumers for locally-sourced food, telling the news source: “I found the idea on a website on farm diversification. I thought it would be to be able to offer people who like local food something a little bit different.”
One chef, Mark Rossi said that the delicacies are proving popular at his restaurant, explaining that he serves them with a garlic sauce.
Ms Howard feeds the snails on dried milk and chalk, which is intended to keep their shells strong.
Last month the Belfast Telegraph reported that snail supplies around the world are dwindling as collectors in eastern Europe seek more lucrative job opportunities in the European Union.
