Rum casks mature new whisky
Distributor First Drinks Brands has announced the addition of a new whisky to the Balvenie Distillery range.
The Balvenie Rum Cask 17-year-old is a single malt scotch and will be available for a limited time from September.
It is matured in the traditional way using oak whisky casks, but then undergoes a second maturation period in Jamaican rum casks, which the drink’s producers claim adds a layer of warmth and spice to Balvenie’s characteristic vanilla flavour.
David Stewart, malt master, said: “This is only the second time we have experimented with maturing the Balvenie in rum cask. This sweet and intense 17-year-old is an exceptionally pleasurable result.”
The drink will have a recommended retail price of £65 and an alcohol by volume content of 43 per cent, according to Talking Retail.
Yesterday just-drinks.com reported that Tomatin Distillery was adding two single malt Scotches to its range, also in limited editions.
