Research funding for pig industry
The Scottish government has announced funding for research into the pig sector, aiming to improve efficiency as well as quality.
A total of £1 million will be made available, with around one-tenth of that being spent on research into labelling and improving animal health.
It comes following recommendations by the Pig Sector Task Force, which was created by cabinet secretary for rural affairs and the environment Richard Lochhead.
Commenting on the plans, he said: “I am confident that today’s announcement, together with our future actions, will benefit producers, processors, retailers and consumers and deliver sustainable, economic growth in the industry for years to come.”
Last month research by Quality Meat Scotland found that pork is becoming increasingly popular among consumers.
In a survey, 97 per cent agreed that it is a versatile cooking option, despite the traditional view of the meat as boring and uninspiring.
