Lemon-flavoured melon hits shelves
A new melon has arrived on British shelves, described as tasting like lemon.
The Spanish-grown fruit is to be stocked by Tesco and the supermarket believes it will excite a market which has grown used to exotic foods.
Resembling the more traditional honeydew variety, the lemon melon is said to have a zesty taste.
Paul Cunningham, Tesco’s melon buyer, claimed that the fruits were previously seen as exotic but the arrival of the likes of lychees and papaya has made them seem ordinary.
He added: “The lemon melon causes a great reaction when people first try them because the last thing you expect from a smooth-textured melon is a tangy aftertaste.”
The new product has a pH level of 4.5, two points lower than a standard melon. It carries a price tag of £1.99.
Flavour producer Givaudan recently launched a new ingredient designed as a replacement for lemon oil, in response to what it claimed is a worldwide shortage of the citrus fruits.
