Industry halts packaging growth
Processes adopted by the food and drink manufacturing industry have successfully halted a growth in packaging, the Waste Resources & Action Programme (Wrap) has announced.
The company found that targets set out in the Courtauld Commitment, a voluntary agreement between Wrap, the government and the industry had been met despite increased production.
Welcoming the report, Food and Drink Federation (FDF) director general Melanie Leech said: “It’s great news that the industry has met the Courtauld target to halt packaging growth and that we are now on track to cut food and packaging waste by 2010.”
She added that FDF members had already prevented more than half a million tones of food waste in 2006 through recovery and recycling, while the industry had its own target of sending zero waste to landfill by 2015.
FDF members Proctor and Gamble and Weetabix recently signed up to the commitment, joining several other companies including Warburtons, Kellogg’s and Cadbury.
