IFT hands out innovation awards

August 2nd, 2008

The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) has recognised innovation in the industry through several awards at its annual meeting and expo this week.

Four companies received the 2008 IFTO Food Expo Innovation Award, having been narrowed down from a field of 46.

Bunge North America was rewarded for a frying system which reduces trans fats by more than 85 per cent, while CEM received the prize for an advanced protein analyser that functions without the use of chemicals or high heat.

Nine judges made the decisions on the basis of such criteria as degree of innovation, technical advancement, benefits to food manufacturers and consumers, and scientific merit.

The other recipients of the international society’s prizes were Multisorb Technologies, which developed an oxygen barrier for packaging that extends shelf life and NC Hyperbaric, which was recognised for new processing equipment.

IFT says its annual food expo “brings together buyers and sellers from all corners of the food science and technology world”, with more than 1,000 companies exhibiting.
