Food and drink industry cutting waste
A survey has found that processes adopted by food and drink manufacturers have prevented in excess of half a million tonnes of waste.
Released today by the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the survey relates to 2006 and shows that of the 835,000 tonnes of food and packaging waste produced at 236 sites, 82 per cent was recycled or recovered.
FDF director of sustainability and competitiveness Callton Young said the results demonstrate a commitment to improving the environment.
He added: “Our members’ initiatives are preventing significant amounts of waste at their sites and it is fantastic that the vast majority Â… that does arise is already treated in an environmentally-friendly way.”
The industry group is aiming to see none of the waste produced going to landfill by 2015.
A Cabinet Office report recently found that £10 billion worth of food is wasted in the UK each year.
