‘Top-secret’ natural sweeteners in production

July 25th, 2008

Three of the world’s best-known soft drink companies are racing to develop low-calorie natural sweeteners.

Reuters has reported that Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Dr Pepper Snapple Group are all working on ‘top-secret’ blends that would be aimed at the health-conscious customer.

Both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have been working with Paraguayan herb stevia, with Coca-Cola reportedly producing a sweetener called Truvia.

PepsiCo claim to be merely awaiting approval from US health regulators before introducing a similar product, which Reuters say would be stocked in health food shops.

Dr Pepper Snapple executive vice president of marketing Randy Gier told the news agency: “We all have scientists working right now to blend new combinations Â… it’s just a matter of time until you see a major breakthrough.”

This month the British Soft Drinks Association pledged to cut waste and emissions through a new environmentally-friendly strategy. Aims include a 30 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2020.
