Sainsbury’s launches ‘first sustainable palm oil product’
The first food product from sustainable palm oil to be produced by Sainsbury’s has launched today (Wednesday).
Sainsbury’s Basics range of fish fingers will now be produced using palm oil from sustainable sources and will arrive in 280 stores, the Telegraph reports.
Speaking last year, when Sainsbury’s announced it is to begin using sustainable palm oil, director of the brand Judith Batchelar stated that the retailer’s actions will have wider beneficial effects.
“By being the first supermarket to pledge that we will only use certified sustainable palm oil, we will help endangered species such as the orangutan and Sumatran tiger, two of the most threatened species on the planet,” she said.
In July, the retailer will launch soap that is made using sustainable palm oil.
And also in this month, all fresh and chilled products containing palm oil will be labelled as such by Sainsbury’s.
