New white wine is ‘as healthy as red’

July 21st, 2008

Scientists have developed a white wine which could have the same health benefits as the red version of the drink.

Drinkers of red wine have long been aware of the antioxidant properties and it seems that those who enjoy a glass of white could soon see similar effects.

Natural chemicals found in the skins of grapes reduce cholesterol and combat heart disease, but the skins are removed during the fermentation process of white wine.

Researchers at the Israeli Institute of Technology have, however, found that the chemicals could be preserved by leaving the skins intact for a relatively short time and adding pure alcohol.

Professor Michael Aviram said: “There has been an incredible response from those that have heard about the research with many thinking of taking up drinking white wine more seriously.”

Last year a report by Vinexpo predicted that Britain would become Europe’s biggest market for wine by 2010 – with nearly £5.5 billion being spent each year.
