New beer celebrates the north’s angel

July 11th, 2008

A special beer has been developed and launched to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the iconic Angel of the North.

Created by Wylam Brewery, the Angel 10th Anniversary Pale Ale was commissioned by Gateshead Council.

Described as “a well balanced bitter with a citrus character in the aroma and finish given by the cascade hop”, the pale copper ale is expected to appeal to beer lovers across the UK.

John Boyle, Wylam Brewery managing director, said: “Just like the Angel, we hope this beer will symbolise the enduring spirit of the people of the north east and the spirit of change across the region.”

Marking a decade since the vast sculpture by Antony Gormley was installed in Gateshead, the ale comes in 500ml bottles and is rated 4.3 per cent alcohol by volume (abv).

Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) has announced that its San Miguel beer will be available in a new 660ml bottle size, as opposed to the current one litre bottle, in a response to consumer needs and trends.
