Morrisons’ innovative steps rewarded
Supermarket chain Morrisons has been rewarded for its efforts to lower carbon emissions.
Government-backed Carbon Trust launched an award scheme to encourage businesses to reduce their carbon footprint and the company was among the 12 initially given the badge.
Morrisons has cut its emissions by nearly 13 per cent over the last three years, with much of that attributed to the installation of energy efficient refrigeration compressors in 100 of its stores.
Carbon trust chief executive Tom Delay said: “We congratulate Morrisons on being one of the pioneers in achieving the Carbon Trust Standard and challenge other businesses to follow their example and prove that they too are taking tangible steps to fight climate change.”
This week it was revealed by TNS that Morrisons’ sales are up 8.1 per cent compared to this time last year, as consumers affected by a tightening economy have opted for cheaper supermarkets over Tesco and Sainsbury’s.
