Eco-friendly chocolate launched

July 21st, 2008

A new chocolate bar has been developed to allow those with a sweet tooth to help protect the environment.

The Chocolate Truffle Company, based in Essex, says the bar will be made from cocoa beans sourced from Rainforest Alliance certified farms.

In order to be awarded a certificate, farmers must prove through annual inspections that they are conserving natural resources as well as protecting the welfare of their workers.

Christine Moss, spokeswoman for The Chocolate Truffle Company, said: “We are very excited about offering great tasting chocolate that is also good for the environment thanks to the Rainforest Alliance certified programme. We feel that consumers will notice the difference.”

The company claims the snack has been developed in response to demand from corporate customers for ethical products and like all its other specialist bars, the ‘Costa Rica 64′ will be made by hand.

Earlier this year fast food giant McDonald’s announced that it would be sourcing all its coffee beans from farms that are part of the Rainforest Alliance scheme.
