Brown sugar sweetener to be launched

July 11th, 2008

A low calorie brown sugar sweetener is set to be launched in the UK by Splenda.

It is claimed to be the first brown sweetener to appear in Britain and to have half the calories of brown sugar.

Splenda Brown Sugar Blend will be sold only in Waitrose from June 16th, extending to other retailers shortly afterwards.

It will be available in packs of 454g, costing £2.99.

Abigail Storms of Splenda said the sweetener could also be used in baking.

It has already proved successful in the US, with a 7.5 per cent share in the brown sugar market.

Splenda manufactures sweeteners based in a substance called sucralose, available as tablets or granulated.

Critics have expressed concern about the nature of sucralose for consumption.
