Arbroath smokies are a ‘hit with Scots’
A chip shop in Arbroath, Scotland, has started selling deep fried Arbroath Smokies and the owner claims that they have been a hit with customers.
Scotland’s fish and chip shops have been famous for deep frying Mars Bars, but Azam Salimi of The Bell Rock chip shop and restaurant has discovered that another Scottish favourite works well in a light batter after a bit of culinary experimentation.
Mr Salimi skins and bones the Arbroath Smokies then coats them in batter and fast fries them, providing a new take on a traditional delicacy at his Angus store which he claims enhances the flavour of the local delicacy.
“As part of the campaign being run by the Sea Fish Industry Association we are trying to do our bit to help conserve cod and haddock stocks by offering customers something different,” he explained.
The new dish was developed in response to customer requests for Arbroath Smokies done in batter or breadcrumbs with the skin and bones removed. Mr Salimi, 47, is now experimenting with the possibility of offering customers deep-fried lobster.
New figures from trade body Seafish indicate that sales of crab rose by 54 per cent over the year to the end of April 2008, as celebrity chefs continue to make shellfish more popular in Britain.
