Veggie BBQ food contains ‘high salt levels’

June 25th, 2008

High levels of salt have been found in some varieties of vegetarian sausages and burgers, the Consensus Action on Salt and Health (Cash) has said.

Research conducted by the body discovered that a Sainsbury’s pork sausage contains 0.7g of salt, while Fry’s Vegetarian Traditional Sausage was the saltiest meat-free alternative consisting of 2.8g of salt.

Cash stated that eating two of the Fry’s sausages would result in an adult nearly reaching their daily recommended allowance of salt, which is 6g.

Carrie Bolt, a nutritionist at Cash, advised consumers to carefully check the labels on vegetarian food products.

Furthermore, some people may choose a veggie option at a barbeque, believing it to be a healthy alternative to meat, she said.

“Vegetarian diets are associated with being higher in fruits and vegetables and with healthier eating, but this research shows that vegetarians could unwittingly be eating meat-free processed products that are high in salt,” she warned.

Recently, Cash criticised Delia Smith’s latest recipes as part of her Cheat TV series as it found some meals were high in salt.
