Morrisons vows to cut plastic bag usage

June 25th, 2008

Supermarket chain Morrisons has announced a new initiative which is aimed at encouraging its customer to cut down on the amount of plastic carrier bags they use.

The retailer is to give away ten million reusable bags to its shoppers in a bid to reduce the retailer’s environmental impact.

Morrisons group marketing and communications director Angus Maciver stated that the scheme could make a “real difference”.

“We believe that the best way to encourage our customers to use fewer bags is by offering larger re-usable bags as an alternative. Other measures weÂ’ve brought in include providing cardboard boxes at our checkouts as an alternative,” he said.

Morrisons is aiming to save up to 50 million plastic bags each month via the drive.

In other news today, the retailer has been awarded the Sandwich Multiple Retailer of the Year Award 2008 at the British Sandwich Association.
