Meat labelling ‘must be clear’
There have been calls for companies in the food industry to ensure they are labelling their meat correctly in relation to the country of origin.
The English Beef and Lamb Executive (Eblex) and the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board Beef and Lamb Sector Company are responding to the results of a recent BBC investigation into so-called British beef sold in restaurants.
Both organisations said they were disappointed to hear that 20 per cent of the 40 south-west venues sampled by the BBC were found to be selling foreign beef but labelling it as ‘local’ or British.
Eblex chief executive Richard Lowe called for clearer labelling by food companies.
“We encourage all caterers to provide information to consumers about where their meat comes from and when it can be shown that false information has been given, Trading Standards must take action,” he advised.
The BBC research concluded that the foreign beef found in the offending restaurants was likely to have originated from as far as field Brazil or Botswana.
