EU may ‘protect’ Cumberland Sausage
The humble Cumberland sausage may soon be elevated to greater prominence in Europe as it is being considered for the protected geographical status honour.
An application is being handed to the European Union by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in a bid to give Cumberland sausages the same special recognition that is awarded to Champagne, Parma ham and feta cheese.
Sausage producers in the region of Cumbria hope to be able to label their meat products with a ‘traditional Cumberland sausage’ title.
If successful, the Cumberland sausage will be in good company, as the Melton Mowbray pork pie is set to receive PGI status in October.
Cumbrian farmer Peter Gott supports the bid and is “proud” an application for PGI status will be submitted.
“We have a passion for food in our area, and traditional Cumberland sausage should only be made to the proper benchmarks,” he said.
