Asda makes ‘unprecedented move’
Supermarket giant Asda has announced that it will be the first retailer to completely remove single use carrier bags from its checkouts.
Following a trial by the company, the retailer is to remove the carrier bags from the view of customers, which will mean shoppers will have to actively ask to use a plastic bag.
According to Asda, the trial of six stores in the UK saw a 40 per cent reduction in the use of carrier bags by consumers.
Corporate affairs director for Asda Paul Kelly made the announcement at HRH Prince of Wales May Day Business Summit, stating: “We are the first major supermarket to take this bold step and completely remove carrier bags from our checkouts”.
Furthermore, other initiatives for the reduction of packaging are in the pipeline, he said, adding: “We are also trialling an incentive scheme that will give customers money off their shopping.”
Marks and Spencer recently announced that it is to charge customers 5p for the use of its plastic carrier bags.
