Protein-enhanced cereals ‘appeal to consumers’
Food companies looking to capitalise on the increasingly health-conscious breakfast market should consider producing protein-enhanced cereals, it has been suggested.
According to research from Solae, which markets soy-based protein ingredients, 79 per cent of breakfast-eating consumers agree that they want to maintain energy levels throughout the morning, 66 per cent agreeing that they look for breakfast choices that will sustain them until lunch.
“Our research revealed that protein-enhanced foods could be positioned to address a broad range of consumer needs that are shared commonly across rather large segments of the population,” said Jean Heggie, director of marketing at Solae.
“In our study, consumers’ desires for breakfast foods that will ‘fill them up’ and ‘keep them energized’ are two of the more significant opportunities we uncovered.”
According to Solae, soy protein consumption can reduce cholesterol, increase bone density, reduce hot flashes during menopause and lead to faster muscle recovery after exercise. It also takes far fewer natural resources to produce than meat, milk or eggs.
