Funding could benefit seafood innovation
The UK seafood industry will benefit from £1.2 million in funding to support innovation and growth.
Projects and businesses will be allocated money from the Sea Fish Industry Authority fund by the 2008 Industry Project Fund (IPF), which was founded last year and gave out £700,000 in funding.
This was increased to more than £1 million for this year when it became clear there was a lot of innovation to be encouraged within the industry, including an idea to use imitation sand eels as live bait for long line sea bass fishing.
Bass fisherman Sam Rush said: “This Seafish funding will provide me with an opportunity for innovation and conservation and enable me to move forward with a responsible attitude towards sustainable fishing.”
Money will also be used to raise standards, efficiency and education within the industry, including training fishermen what to do in an emergency, such as how to prevent their boat from sinking.
Seafish, established in 1981, is sponsored by the four UK government fisheries departments and funded by a levy on seafood.
