First supermarket 1% fat milk launched

May 3rd, 2008

Sainsbury’s is to launch the UK’s first own-brand milk product that contains one per cent fat this month.

This product will sit along side the traditional three different types of milk that consumers are used to choosing between; skimmed, semi-skimmed and whole.

According to the retailer, 1% milk will “revolutionise” the milk market providing health conscious consumers with a new choice.

Similar products are already popular in the US and Canada, the firm stated.

The move has been welcomed by the Food Standards Agency, as the milk will contain the same amount of calcium and vitamin B but less saturated fat.

“Consuming lower-fat options can help us all reduce the amount of saturated fat we eat. This launch will help consumers take a simple step towards a diet lower in saturated fat,” head of the nutrition division Rosemary Hignett said.

She added that consumers now have more choice.
