Costa moves towards Rainforest Alliance coffee

May 11th, 2008

High street chain Costa Coffee has announced that it is to change its range of coffee by 2010 so that it only uses Rainforest Alliance certified products.

Following news last week that McDonalds has switched to Rainforest Alliance certified tea from PG Tips, instead of its traditional supplier Tetley’s, Costa is to ensure it only sources coffee from Rainforest Alliance assured farms in the next two years.

From September this year, 30 per cent of its Mocha Italia blend will be from Rainforest Alliance certified sources, the company stated.

David Hutchinson, the marketing director at Costa Coffee, stated that it will take time before the company can claim that its full range of coffee is sourced from Rainforest Alliance farms.

Explaining the chain’s move, he said: “It’s an investment that is right for our business, right for the coffee industry as a whole and we believe it’s a journey our customers will want to be part of.”

The company is committed to providing “quality” and “authentic” coffees, Mr Hutchinson added.
