Teens advised to eat breakfast

April 4th, 2008

Teenagers should try to eat breakfast every day, new research has suggested, which could mean on-the-go products become more popular with young adults.

In a five-year study, it was found that teens who consume something at breakfast time are slimmer than those who skip the first meal of the day.

Conducted by the University of Minnesota, the analysis of the eating habits of 2,000 youngsters revealed that teens who missed breakfast were 5lbs heavier on average.

Explaining the reasoning behind the results, head researcher Mark Pereira stated: “While they ate more calories, they did more to burn those off and that may be because those who ate breakfast did not feel so lethargic.”

Chairman of the Child Growth Foundation at the National Obesity Forum Tam Fry said consistency is needed when educating young adults.

“We need to make clear that eating regular meals is vital – and that a proper breakfast is very important,” he stated.

High levels of salt in child’s diet were linked to obesity recently in a study published by online source Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association.
