Local foods sought by Tesco

April 7th, 2008

Supermarket giant Tesco is looking to stock more locally-sourced foods in its stores, following recent consumer demand for this type of food.

The retailer is aiming to increase sales in this category to £400 million this year, Meatinfo.co.uk reports.

In order to achieve this feat, the supermarket has opened a number of local buying offices to source the best products from different regions of the UK.

Peter Broadbent, category meat specialist for the chain, stated that company had put a lot of time into the development.

“We want to get the message across that we’re very serious about local sourcing and local meat,” he said.

“We’ve got Scottish Aberdeen Angus beef in Scotland and West Country meat in the south-west.”

The retailer plans to create a locally-source category worth £1 billion by 2011.

Tesco recently announced that it was happy to work with the government on creating legislation that would stop the sale of cheap alcohol in supermarkets.
