Consumer food fears revealed
Consumers can have irrational fears or concerns over certain types of food, a new study has found.
Conducted by the Food Standards Agency, a poll of consumers has discovered that 90 per cent would be afraid to eat chicken from a factory contaminated by bird flu. This is despite the fact that people can’t contract bird flu from properly cooked chicken.
A further 65 per cent expressed concern about eating genetically-modified (GM) food substances, yet the agency claims that such foods are as safe as their non-GM counterparts.
Leading scientist Professor Colin Blakemore, who is the chair of the General Advisory Committee on Science, stated that there were positives from the findings.
“The good news is that people are clearly more aware of the impact of some risks to their health – particularly too much salt in their diet and some food safety issues,” he said.
He remarked that scientists must “communicate reliable evidence” to the public.
The last survey by the Food Standards Agency discovered that consumers are becoming more aware of healthy eating options.
